“And s for you, be fruitful and multiply; Bring forth abundantly in the earth And multiply in it” (Gen. 9:7).
God simply desires that we multiply. That was His ultimate agenda at creation and still is. It is not difficult to understand why: Apart from the fact that God is a God of abundance (Psa. 65:11, Eph. 3:20), His power is too enormous for Him to dwell in the place of scarcity. One of the ways God registers His presence is by making good things manifest in abundant supply. Every time we encounter overwhelming supply of anything, particularly of dimension that we cannot explain, we are forced to acknowledge God and by this, His name is glorified. So, God brings glory to His name through the supply of good things in abundance, which essentially is a result of multiplication.
To this effect, we can understand why at creation, after He created male and female, the mandate He gave them as He blessed them is to “be fruitful and multiply” upon the surface of the earth (Gen. 1:28). After He destroyed the earth with flood, during the time of Noah who was graciously preserved, as He released Noah and his family to repopulate the earth, He declared the same mandate – “Be fruitful and multiply, bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it” (Gen. 9:7). This simply amplified the desire of the Almighty God for all His creatures to inhabit the earth in multiplication. Yet many more examples abound in the scripture, that corroborate this divine desire for multiplication and abundance. For instance, when the people of God, Israelites, dwelled in Egypt, as foreigners, they multiplied and became so numerous that the Egyptians couldn’t but notice and eventually were forced to adopt wicked scheme to attack their numerical strength.
In this new season, which is the ninth month, as we look up to God, let our desire and focus be multiplication. We all know that number nine stands for fruitfulness and the truth is that all these three elements bring glory to God, apart from the fact that they bring forth new things! So when there is fruitfulness, it’s associated with bringing forth new things for which the name of the Almighty God is glorified. For instance, God prophesied through prophet Joel that He will bring both “the former and latter rain” at the same time, for which the threshing floors shall be full of wheat and the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil (Joel. 2:23-24). He also declared further that He will restore lost years, as a result of which “you shall eat in plenty and be satisfied and praise the name of the LORD your God…….” (Joel. 2:25-26).
This season, as we embrace the ninth month, let us continue to believe our God for new things of new glory, with our focus on multiplication. May we all be fruitful and multiply in every area, at all levels, to the glory of God, in Jesus name! Amen.
