New beginning, New level

“Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah” (1 Sam 16:13, NKJV).

According to our anchor verse, David was anointed amidst his brother and the Spirit of God came upon him, from that day forward (1sam 16:13). There are many things to take away from this scripture: First, is that a change came to the life of David – a transformation, in the sense that David was taken from a particular level of his existence to another. To this extant, he was given a new beginning in life. Secondly, is the fact that this transformation was orchestrated by God Himself. David did not bring it upon himself by his own strength or by magical tricks, rather God Himself made it happen by sending Prophet Samuel to him in his father’s house, amongst his brothers.

Thirdly, David was specifically anointed, whereby the Spirit of the Lord came upon Him. Everybody present saw him being anointed, but nobody truly understood what essentially the anointing has done in his life at that point. It can also be said that David would not have realised how much his life has changed by virtue of the anointing – until he began to experience the move and the power of the Holy Spirit in his life. The explanation of this is that nothing comes to us unless it is given by God (John 3:27), which means if we want our level to change, then we must seek God earnestly for it.  We must also ensure that we do things are pleasing in the sight of God, so that our prayer will not be an abomination before God (Pro.15:8,29; Pro 28:9).

It is also important to note that everything God does has a spiritual dimension to it and this spiritual dimension is the real deal – the most important aspect. David’s brother saw Prophet Samuel anoint David, but they did not see the Holy Spirit coming upon him. After the anointing, physically speaking David remained the same, but spiritually, he has changed! His new level started right there and then, but this, his brothers did not know. I say this to say that there are things God has done in our midst, as a church, in the preceding months of this year, and will be doing in this new month and new quarter of the year, that are spiritually designed to bring us into new levels of existence. We must be spiritually sensitive to understand it, so that we can maximise the benefits thereof and not continue to operate in ignorance, which is not profitable for us, as children of God (Isa 5:13).

Another thing to take away from this story is that, David was chosen among all his brethren – the others were rejected but God chose David. Two reasons can be adduced for this: i) David loved God and, ii) David found mercy in the sight of God. These two factors are important, as we look unto God for our new level this season. We must renew our love for God and also pray for His mercy in our lives. May the Lord answer our prayers and establish us in our new levels, for new beginnings, indeed, in Jesus name. Amen!
